THE WHITE CITY
Mérida is the largest city and the capital of the state of Yucatán, it is also the cultural and financial capital of the region. It is a modern and cosmopolitan city, with museums, art galleries, restaurants, shops and boutiques. It is also one of the most important places to experience Mayan heritage.
Mérida was founded in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo "the waiter", and built on the site of the ancient Mayan city T'ho, which means "City of the five hills." T'ho was the center of Mayan culture and activity in the Yucatan region. After the arrival of the Spaniards, the five pyramids of the old City were destroyed, their ruins used for the construction of the cathedral of Mérida and other important buildings.
